Brian Kelley Talks "Kiss My Boots," Says He Always Wants To Put His Truth In Songs

Watch: Brian Kelley's video for his contentious new banger "Kiss My Boots" is out now.

Brian Kelley shared his truth this week with his new song "Kiss My Boots."

The song details a betrayal – and for Kelley, "Kiss My Boots" may be about closure.

"It's a song about, for me, about getting my power back and saying how I feel, saying what I think and owning that in a song," said Kelley, who wrote the contentious barn-burner with Blake Redferrin and Dylan Guthro about a year ago. Dann Huff produced it.

The lyrics include: I'm crankin' Hank, drinkin' Jack| Airin' out the past| Want the world to know that you did me wrong| I don't how you act sweet, after how you did me| Here's a middle finger to you through a song

The hook is, "You can kiss my boots."

In a YouTube video, Kelley explained that he, Redferrin and Gurtho penned the song in his home studio, after kicking around ideas with another writer on Zoom for a couple of hours. Nothing felt right, so the men took a break and grabbed some food to clear their heads. His friend on Zoom had to get to a show, but the other three men kept digging for ideas.

Guthro threw out the line, "It comes out in the whiskey," and the song grew from there.

"That struck a chord with me," Kelley said. "I remember getting to the end of the chorus, and we didn't have a hook. I just knew it needed some emotion. I knew it needed some attitude and to kind of channel a little Hank Jr."

Kelley started singing it, and what came out was: "I can't help but tell the Tennessee truth. I'm cranking Hank drinking Jack, and you can kiss my boots."

The Florida native said he was "really excited" when he landed on those lyrics and thought they were perfect.

"It was exactly how I wanted to represent what I was feeling," Kelley said.

Kelley rose to fame as half of Florida Georgia Line. The duo went on hiatus in 2022, and Kelley and his duo partner, Tyler Hubbard, started solo careers. There is significant speculation that "Kiss My Boots" is directed at Hubbard.

Kelley named-checked Taylor Swift in the video. He reminded fans that he toured with her in 2013. The singer said he learned a lot, soaked up as much as he could and loved how she puts everything she is going through in her songs, which he said he does, too. Kelley explained that he had "gone through a really difficult situation the last couple of years" and wanted to "pour my heart out in a song."

He wrote the song to heal and was surprised when his team told him they wanted it to be a radio single.

"I've learned so much about songwriting over this record cycle, and 'Kiss My Boots' is another example of just continuing to show up," he said. "As a songwriter, as an artist, you always want to put your truth into songs. You always want to leave a little bit of yourself and as much as yourself in these songs. And that's what I did. I poured my whole heart out and left it right there on the table."

Kelley said the song's message is universal and anyone who has been through relationships and betrayal can relate.

"I'm really, really grateful for all the support for my whole team, and I'm really excited for everybody to find their 'Tennessee Truth' in this song," he said.
